North Kirra Surf Club

North Kirra Clubhouse

North Kirra Surf Life Saving Club               Date of visit 28th September

My first impression of this club was that it is small and intimate with a nice welcome “feel”.

Founded in 1949 and renovated in 1997, it features a verandah well protected from wind and rain with stylish folding windows. The club was clean and tidy with comfortable and serviceable furniture.

The bistro is called “Deck 49” and the steak sanga was described in the menu as:

The Gourmet Steak Sandwich

120g rib fillet steak, bacon, lettuce, tomato, egg, cheese, caramelised onions, pineapple, bbq sauce and chips.                                                    $16.95

Whilst I prefer not to have bacon or egg on my burgers or steak sandwiches, I had decided at the beginning of the Search for the Best Steak Sanga that I would have them as they come and only having “extras” if shown on the menu, but no deletions.

Our friend Toni was not so inhibited and she ordered the steak sandwich without egg.

Denise ordered a Peri Peri Burger – described as Marinated grilled breast fillet served with lettuce, tomato, cheese and chips                                 $14.95

The meat was tender and without any gristle, the toast was well done but not buttered. I felt that the absence of butter and beetroot and the presence of hard yolk egg made the sanga too dry. Toni felt pretty much the same, even though she didn’t have any egg. A side serving of tomato sauce for the chips might help overcome the dryness of this otherwise enjoyable and substantial steak sanga.

Denise felt there was too much peri peri sauce and it was a bit too hot for her taste – perhaps they should have a mild option as does Nandos.

The view from the verandah is fabulous, you can see down to Rainbow Bay and Snapper Rocks, the very wide beach area at North Kirra and up the coast to Runaway Bay. It won’t have the sunset that Rainbow Bay has, but during the day, I think that this one has the best view so far.

Will I be back? Of course I will want to enjoy the views and intimacy of this club again and maybe I’ll simply try their Chicken Parmagiana or something else next time.

I welcome your feedback and if you want to cast a vote for North Kirra, please go ahead.

In Search of the Best Steak Sandwich

When we first came to live on the Gold Coast we decided with our friends Peter & Fennis (who live in Brisbane) that we would have lunch at every one of the 17 surf clubs on the Gold Coast with dining facilities. Well, it didn't happen and we probably have only done three of them together, but since deciding to produce a blog, I thought that I would resurrect the plan of having a regular lunch at different clubs.
