Date of visit 6th September 2011
Whilst this club dates back many years it has been fully refurbished and has a lift to get you to the dining area. The views from the very large wind and rain protected verandah dining area are truly spectacular, rivalling the best of the beach views. The wave effect of the ceiling is a good architectural feature. We were lucky enough to get a window seat.
Unusually, we were handed our lunch menus and the “daily specials” sheet (14 items) when we signed in downstairs at the front door, this is an innovation that could well be copied by other clubs as it eases one into the decision making mode.
There are no menus shown on their website, I guess that the number of daily specials makes it a bit more “volatile” than with other establishments who might only have 2 or 3 daily specials..
The steak sandwich was described in the menus as:
Mega Sirloin Steak Sandwich $15.95
I would have preferred the ingredients to be listed on the menu. The service was quick and the sandwich was moderately toasted without butter and came with a serving of chips on the plate. There were two generous layers of sirloin steak, onions, lettuce, tomato and cucumber (no beetroot or cheese) with a little bit too much barbecue sauce.
Denise and our friend Fennis both ordered Grilled Tuna Fillets with garlic butter prawns $24.95 – this was on the daily special sheet. They both thought that the meal was too large and that the Tuna was dry due to overcooking, but the prawns were super.
Our friend Peter ordered the Steak & Kidney Country Style Pie $15.95. This came in a ramekin and was a generous size with plenty of kidney content which pleased Peter very much and earned a high mark from him. He thought that they should call it a “Kidney & Steak” pie.
The menu permits changes to standard dishes, so there is an opportunity to say “hold the cucumber” or “add some cheese” or whatever – although I have taken a policy decision not to alter the way dishes are normally served.
We enjoyed our visit and will return to this very pleasant club, but the next time I think I will give go for the Steak & Kidney Pie or maybe their Chicken Parmagiana.
I have a confession, I asked the club to provide me with a photograph and they willingly obliged, but unfortunately for me, the young lady seated was not one of my dining partners.
